Underground 411 Weekly – January 28, 2021
The last week of January was packed with content for the hip hop heads in the back. We’re talking Pharoahe Monch interviews, Rugged Man AMAs, and a mysterious Doc D (or Logic?) mixtape. We’ve compiled the necessary details to keep you in the know, read on to get caught up in the hottest stories this week.
Pharoahe Monch Interview Released, Discusses TH1RT3EN, Asthma, and More
PopkillerTV Plus blessed us with an exclusive Pharoahe Monch interview this week after meeting up with him pre-pandemic to talk about his near future ventures. With his rock band having dropped their newest album A Magnificent Day For An Exorcism on the 22nd, the timing couldn’t be better! Monch talks over a multitude of topics with interviewer Mateusz Natali, from growing up and being inspired by jazz music, to his lifestyle changes made to combat his asthma issues (hint: he eats healthy and stays active in the gym).
The 13 minute video manages to cram in tons of gems about Pharoahe’s mindset and early career. He specifically covers the importance of mentors in the world today, and not just in the music industry. Naming the legendary producer Paul C in particular as an early mentor of his, they discuss how he honed in on his flows and ear for beats from working alongside talented members of the industry. If you want to hear more about his relationship with Organized Konfusion, to his affinity for pop music, check out the full video!
“Planetory Destruction” Mixtape Released by Doc D (or Logic?)
Logic sure was hyping up this newcomer, announcing that he would be handling all the production and promising fans a fun project on it’s way to DatPiff. The latest project to come from BobbyBoy Records is a concept mixtape about a supervillain hell-bent on destroying the entirety of the known universe- all because his girl Sharon broke up with him. Logic’s production is on point, reminiscent of his mentor NO I.D.
The masked rapper Doc D does his thing, spitting bars with a 90’s flow that is entertaining as well as impressive. His voice, while heavily edited, sounds increasingly familiar as the tracks go by… and this served as plenty of evidence to support the claims of Logic’s fan base: that Doc D is a moniker for the recently-retired rapper. You’ll have to listen and hear for yourself, but the similarities are flaunted often during his hardest verses. A nostalgic mashup of dusty boom bap and radio skits (blasting across the universe) suck you into the masked rapper’s humor filled world of destruction.
R.A. The Rugged Man Promotes His Latest Work with a Raucous Reddit AMA
“Why are moderators deleting/censoring some of my answers ?”
“seriously though !!!! Why?”R.A. the Rugged Man via Reddit
The Rugged Man himself took to Reddit to put on an Ask Me Anything thread this week, racking up a wild 750+ comments of interaction. Managing to stew up some controversy even on an internet forum, the top upvoted comment isn’t a question. “Why are moderators deleting/censoring some of my answers ?” he rants. “seriously though !!!! Why?” Some commenters have speculated that this in particular is just part of the theme that runs through the new album about the corrupt political landscape and widespread censorship. Moderators publicly came out of the woodwork to address his concerns, so only time will tell what actually happened.
He took his time replying to plenty of Redditors about his tour alongside Insane Clown Posse (he loved it), confidence when it comes to writing (“just let the shit flow and don’t overthink it”), the story behind his name, and more! It’s great to see a name as big as his taking the time to sit down and talk with fans that otherwise would not be able to get the chance to ask him questions.
