Trump’s Impeachment: Gets Off Scot-Free, Again
At this point, I’m not even surprised. After Trump’s fruitless impeachment trial Saturday, it’s clear that his influence spans beyond his presidential term.
Why are so many Republican Senators afraid to rock the boat? Many have shared their thoughts publicly and privately on this matter, stating that a conviction could be potentially perilous. Thus, only seven Republican Senators voted to convict.
So, what does this mean for the standard of our future presidents? Will future impeachment trials become the next publicity stunt to keep the American people tranquil and at bay? If no one is willing to rock the boat, then how can we hold our future presidents to a higher standard?
Short By 10 Votes For Impeachment
So, it looks like Trump got off scot-free, again. It’s like he’s surrounded by an impenetrable wall: no matter what he does, no matter how many impeachment trials he goes through (two- which is a record for any president, by the way), we just can’t seem to touch him.
However, we came extremely close. It’s not as if Trump had overwhelming support, and 57% of the Senate voted in favor of his impeachment regarding his involvement in the assault on the Capitol.
We were only 10 votes shy of a conviction. We needed 2/3 of the Senate to vote to convict. And we just barely missed it.
At this point, I feel like I’m watching a group of toddlers in a soccer game, and no one’s aiming for the goal.
We’ve tried so many times to right this wrong, to demand justice, but we just can’t seem to touch him.
So…Can Trump Run For Office Again?
Sadly…yeah. Since he has avoided countless convictions and impeachments, he’ll be able to run for office again.
How sad that we must continue our fight against this monster. It’s not like the debates, the elections and Trump’s constant spews of voter fraud weren’t stressful enough. Now, we have this constant, imminent threat looming over us- the threat of Trump’s return.
And you know his supporters will have plenty to say in the four years leading up to the next presidential debate. I don’t even want to imagine what the Trump merchandise is going to look like. Who knows what they’ll do this time if Trump loses the next presidential race. Maybe they’ll storm the Supreme Court this time?
Our Fight Isn’t Over
We can’t put our country through another four years of Trump’s reign. Watching the next four years of Biden’s presidency is going to be extremely nerve-racking- every move he makes, any mistakes he makes and any failed policies will be detrimental to the outcome of the 2024 election.
These are going to be our make-it-or-break-it years. If the Democrats and Biden don’t step up and implement some beneficial changes, Trump may weasel his way back into the White House. We might have to try to impeach him a third time.
Sadly, even if Trump doesn’t run for president again, there will always be another candidate like him. This candidate may not be as arrogant and vindictive, but there will always be racists, bigots and bullies in the world.
Discrimination and manipulation will always have a place in the workforce if we don’t continue our fight, and it’s our jobs to vote these bullies out. We can’t always weed these bigots out, as their employment is embedded in our school systems, hospitals, banks, etc. However, we do have a chance to clean out our government and hold it to a higher standard.
We must continue to vote, and we must continue to be involved in politics. We can’t turn a blind eye anymore- enough is enough. Our government has continued to fail us time and time again, and it’s our job to hold it accountable.
Let’s make sure that Trump doesn’t get another chance to walk through those White House doors. He may have avoided the shame of impeachment, but he is still a shameful, disgusting representation of our country and democracy.
Let’s come together, and let’s show the rest of these bigots that they have no future in politics.
