Here are some of the best video games that you can play while being high.
Classic Games are the best when you play it stoned
When it comes to the definition of a classic, we’ll base this list on how cars are defined. For cars, a classic is 15 years, and an antique is 25 years. Several of these games are considered antiques by now. Most younger people (maybe under 25 or so) would probably laugh at the graphics and visuals of these games. You can play games on your smartphone that blow most of these out of the water – but there’s are good reasons why these games are classics. And that’s the gameplay, the replayability, and the social aspect of them. In no particular order, here are ten of the best classic video games you can play while being high.
1. Mario Kart
Mario Kart was a classic game because of how interactive and social it was. There’s never a bad time for Mario Kart, especially if you’re getting stoned with friends, which is why it’s more fun when you’re playing the game stoned and with your friends. The go-kart-style game was originally released on SNES back in 1992, but since there have been many versions of it. My favorite of which is the version for N64. The ability to get various powerups and crush your buddies in a race to the finish while playing as a little person with a mushroom head made this classic video game so critically and commercially successful.
2. Madden
What can be said about the greatest sports video game of all time that hasn’t been said already? While John Madden did is a Super Bowl-winning head coach, his legacy is always this classic video game. While there are, of course, other classic football games, Madden was adamant about making the action on the field as real as possible. This meant 11-on-11, which was taxing for the console technology at the time. But the developers of Madden got it done, and BOOM! A classic was born – year after year. While we disagree with the legal monopoly that Madden currently has on NFL games, there’s a reason why most of us grew up falling in love with the game of football because of this classic video game.
3. NBA Jam
Is it the shoes? Far from representing the actual game of basketball, this classic video game was memorable for its massive dunks and the ability of the outside shooters to never miss a shot when they were ON FIRE! Who was your squad with NBA Jam? Mine was Seattle, who isn’t even a franchise anymore – classic. BOOMSHAKALAKA!
4. Goldeneye – Classic Video Game with Bond Villians
No, Mr. Bond, I want you to die. The single-player modes were pretty great with this classic video game for N64, but what everyone remembers is playing their friends in multiplayer mode. That was made even better with the fact that you could play with four controllers. Up until the N64, the vast majority of games could only be played with 2 players. Many an argument starts when the classic red screen comes up and your character falls to the ground, meaning your opponent is the winner. This whole competitive game thing is made more fun when you’re tipsy.
5. Grand Theft Auto Vice City
Since the release of Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001, the Grand Theft Auto, or GTA series has been a favorite of both stoners and non-stoners alike.
This is for a very good reason: it rocks! The adrenaline rush of the game coupled with the effects of the weed you’re consuming combine to make a very high party!
Set in the 1980s in a fictional version of Miami, Vice City was everything you’d expect from a classic video set in that time period. Pastel colors, Hawaiian shirts, bikinis, pastel suits – and cocaine. Nothing exceeds excess, and Rockstar Games improved upon the previous installment of GTA with Vice City. The game came out about 25 years ago, and there are still some gamers who are working on the missions and various side games that come along with the GTA series. All of the GTA titles are great in their own right, but Vice City has always been my favorite.
6. WWF No Mercy
When the N64 was released in 1996, it was the best thing going at the time. Games like Mario 64 featured worlds and interactive 3D gameplay we hadn’t seen before. In 2000 though, technology was advancing and the N64 started to becoming an outdated retro console. It went out with a bag with what many video game fans consider to be the best rasslin’ game of all time.
Attitude Era Gets its Classic Video Game
At the time, WWF (now WWE) wrestling fans never got their opportunity to experience our generation’s best era of wrestling, the attitude era. No Mercy did just that with the release of No Mercy. Stone Cold, The Rock, DX, Kane, Undertaker, and so many others had their spot in a great game. The areas and entrances were dope, and you could put out chairs, 2X4s, baseball bats, and others just about any time. Definitely deserving of this list.
7. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!!
We can argue as to whether Iron Mike is the best boxer of all time – or if it’s Ali. But I will ask you this, did Ali ever get his own video game? Your character is the boxer Mac in this classic video game, who looks to be about a solid 3 feet shorter than all of his hilariously memorable-looking opponents. And then you face the final boss – who else but Iron Mike? The final boss is nearly impossible to beat in this game, just as Iron Mike was in his prime before his downfall.
8. Tekken
Tekken is my go-to game for when I’m high but on the lookout for some competitive gaming. Many of our younger readers might not even realize that Sony Playstation didn’t start at PS3. In fact, back in the day, it was just called Playstation. The fighting game Tekken was one of the Playstation’s flagship games, and for good reason. It was awesome to play, with a wide variety of fighters who all had some awesome moves. My go-to’s were King, the wrestler with the Tiger head, and Marshal Law, who is an obvious Bruce Lee clone. In later versions of Tekken, my guy was Lei Wulong. He’s arguably the toughest character in the game to master – definitely not the right pick for button-mashers.
9. World of Warcraft – Classic Video Game for PC
While I have personally always been a console gamer, I couldn’t end this list of classic video games without adding a PC game. I don’t know much about the actual game itself, but I do know several gamers who have long-term relationships with this classic game – sometimes unhealthy ones.
10. Halo – Classic Video Game for Xbox
Just like WOW, I never really got into playing Halo – but I know it belongs on this list. If for no other reason, Xbox is feeling lonely.
