Netflix Review: ‘Eric Andre: Legalize Everything’ Sucks
“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s the Eric Andre Show!” A.K.A Famous last words that will come back to haunt you.
Eric Andre is a glitch in the matrix and that’s putting it modestly. He’s the brainchild of Tim and Eric sketches, absurdist comedian Tom Green, and Adult Swim cartoon shows like Space Ghost: Coast to Coast. All of these idiosyncrasies and hilarity are strung together to create the comedic anomaly that is Eric Andre.
On his wildly popular show The Eric Andre Show, the comedian serves up a heaping batch of anti-humor. Simply put, he turns traditional comedy so far on its head that you’re able to come full circle with him and piss your pants from laughter.
But on the other hand, you may also come away feeling like you wasted 10 minutes of your life.
In any given episode Andre might slurp vomit in front of a reality TV star, try to legalize ranch on the streets of New York, or roll out Chance the Rapper in a giant coffee cup. The show is the ultimate inside joke hence its cult-like status.
Now, in his first original stand-up special for Netflix, Legalize Everything, Andre looks to translate his persona to the stage.
The Eric Andre Character Doesn’t Work For Stand-up

While there were brief moments of humor, Andre’s stand-up special boils down to a drug-induced stream of consciousness.
As fans of Andre know, he’s a master at toeing the line between just crazy enough and plain stupidity. This special was almost all the latter and none of the former; it felt like I was watching a drunk idiot who brags to his friends about how “hilarious” his stand-up is.
Most of his jokes were fragmented questions about drugs or vain anecdotes about Andre’s love for drugs.
“You guys ever have one of those days where you smoke a big ass joint and blow it right into a baby’s face?”
Reviews haven’t stopped raving about this special, but real recognize real. One-liners like the above are no doubt hilarious, but once you watch how Andre delivers said material, you see that it’s spastic, cringey, and downright dumb.
On top of that, he’s so high energy that it feels as though he’s forcing you to laugh. It’s like being trapped in a room with a kid who keeps screaming to get your attention (except this kid is screaming about crystal meth and LSD)
After 10 minutes I was already fatigued.
I love Eric Andre, but this special was trash (looking forward to that next season of the Eric Andre Show tho).
Agreed. I’d heard about this guy from a friend (and later found out he voices Luci on Disenchantment), and thought it would be right up my alley. I’m a huge fan of absurd comedy like Tim and Eric, or anything Tyler the Creator comes up with, so it should have been a slam dunk, right? Basically it ended up a painful, drawn out, preachy guy screaming randomly and laughing at his own jokes. Very disappointing. I’d still be willing to check out his normal show though, I just don’t plan on viewing his stand up ever again.
