NFL on Cannabis: Joe Montana Invests $75 Millions in Caliva Marijuana Company
As the legal cannabis industry grows, so do former players entering into the sector and the league’s stance on plant medicine.
We’ve discussed how the NFL views cannabis in a considerable amount of detail, as well as how many former NFL stars are entering the cannabis industry. Now, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Hall of Famer Joe Montana, enters into the cannabis industry as well.
Former Footballer Joe Drops a Cool $75 Mill
A cool $75 million is what Joe plans to invest in the marijuana operator Caliva, based in San Jose – according to a report from ESPN. Caliva is an interesting and promising company for Montana to invest in, as they operate a farm, a retail store, a distribution center, and a delivery service. Additionally, the Caliva brand distributes its cannabis products to dozens of other California-based retail locations.
To kick off his entrance into the emerging industry, Montana was the star guest at the recent American Cannabis Summit. This was a free hour-long webinar held that took place on February 25th. Whether you are a fan of American football or not, Montana offers some interesting cannabis investing insight on the webinar.
Joe Montana’s Caliva and its dispensaries
Caliva is a premier recreational marijuana delivery service and it is a dedicated team that delivers recreational cannabis throughout California. With known investors like Jay-Z & Joe Montana, they are well known for providing the best service and product. Caliva services a number of cities in the South Bay. Caliva’s inventory consists of THC-rich flowers, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, concentrates, accessories, as well as a myriad of hemp and other CBD products.
Caliva and Jay-Z
Hip-hop mogul and businessman Jay-Z has also launched his first official cannabis line with a weed company in California known as Caliva. He joined Caliva as a chief brand strategist in July 2019 where he developed Monogram. In November 2020, Auerbach’s SPAC announced a deal to acquire Caliva and Monogram, which was a joint venture between Jay-Z and Caliva, and Left Coast Ventures, which owns musician cannabis brands like Marley Natural and Carlos Santana’s Mirayo.
The edibles industry is exploding nationwide, and Caliva is well known for its edibles. It stocks a variety of savory treats and sweets. They include lozenges, drinks, tinctures, and desserts.
Since Caliva opened shop in July 2015, the Caliva dispensary has contributed over $3 million in tax revenue to San Jose, which makes it one of the single largest taxpayers in the city. Some of the Caliva dispensaries in California are:
-
Caliva in San Jose, California
-
Deli By Caliva in San Jose, California
-
Deli By Caliva in Bellflower, California
Former Players Who Love THAT LOUD
Of course, Montana isn’t the only former NFL player to join the industry. Steelers legend Franco Harris and former Miami star running back Ricky Williams also have their own places in the legal cannabis sector. A chorus of other former NFL players have come out in support of cannabis medicine and against NFL policy – including former number one overall pick defensive end Chris Long and superstar wideout Randy Moss.
Montana entering the cannabis industry has brought up an interesting question. Will Tom Brady join his former teammate Gronk and try his luck at legal cannabis when he finally retires? Montana and Brady are constantly compared for their play on the field. Why not compare how the two fare in the legal herb industry? It would only seem fair, right?
NFL on Cannabis – Better Policy Under New CBA
Joe Montana entering the cannabis space is a blip on the radar as far as March NFL news. Free agency occurred and the aforementioned GOAT Brady is now playing in Tampa Bay. It’s sad that the GOAT will play out his final career days in front of a plastic pirate ship.
Under the new CBA, the league still suspends a player for cannabis consumption. That is, “only in the event of extreme and repeated disregard of the policy or significant violations of applicable law regarding the possession and use of marijuana,” according to a report from NBC Sports Pro Football Talk.
NFL on Cannabis – The Draft Goes On!
The 2020 NFL Draft is also coming up on April 23-25. Hopefully, we won’t see any ridiculousness like the news about former first-round draft pick offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil. No one should drag a player through the coals because he takes a few tokes to relax in college. Not even if they use a gas mask bong. That is, of course, if the NFL Draft happens on time. The league says it will happen on time, despite the Coronavirus outbreak. The NBA and NHL seasons are still not happening currently.
