DEA Increases Power, Now Has Authority to Investigate Protestors
The DEA increases power, yet again. The agency requested and has been permitted to investigate and police people involved in ongoing protests regarding the murder of George Floyd.
In a concerning report from BuzzFeed News, the DEA now has the power to investigate nationwide protesters involved in the rallies and demonstrations over the murder of George Floyd. The report says that the federal agency has the “temporary authority to enforce any federal crime committed as a result of protests over the death of George Floyd,” as well as to “conduct covert surveillance” on protestors.
DEA Increases Power, Already Has too Much
This is sweeping power given to an agency that already has too much power. The federal agency has the power to classify and schedule drugs like cannabis. The agency determines if drugs have medicinal value, keeping cannabis at a schedule 1, meaning no medicinal value. This is despite drastic evidence that cannabis does have medical value. The agency continues to ignore or shut down requests to reclassify the plant medicine. States should have the right to decide how they classify medications, not the DEA.
DEA Increases Power – How Far Will They Take It?
Will the DEA arrest people at dispensaries? At this point, they will probably be focusing on protestors, but we aren’t going to put it past them. What concerns us more is the fact the DEA increases power and can now secretly surveil protestors. It wouldn’t surprise us if this right to covert surveillance was used elsewhere, not just on protestors. As we see time and time again, government agencies claim they are “temporarily” getting more power. And then that power never goes away. In fact, it continues to increase. Just take a look at the NSA’s power after 911 and the Patriot Act. This is now worse 20 years later, with no end in sight.
State’s Rights – More Important Than Ever
It’s more important than ever to speak out about this kind of sweeping power grab. The smaller the vote, the more important it likely is. Be sure to vote at state and local levels. This type of power increase is not okay. It won’t go away unless we take action.
